Ieuan Thomas Evans

Ieuan Thomas Evans came from Cilmaengwyn, Godrergraig, and had attended Godrergraig Chapel. He was working at Pontardawe Steel Works when he was called up and died on the Normandy Front on 2nd August 1944. He was the cousin of Private Alwyn Hughes, who also died on the Normandy Front on 12th August.

Family Details Born 1st March 1915. Son of Lewis EVANS (Born 22nd March 1888, died 1946) Colliery Hewer and Mary EVANS (Born 31st January 1892, died 1958) of Tanydarren Cilmaengwyn Godre'rgraig. She was known as "May" and was the son of John M Lloyd (born Dyfynog 1868) and Mary Ann Lloyd (born 1970)
Related to: James PHILLIPS and Cousin of Edward Alwyn HUGHES, both natives of Ystalyfera who were killed in World War Two.

GODRE'RGRAIG SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION
The sad news has been received by Mr and Mrs Lewis Evans Tanydarren Cilmaengwyn Godre'rgraig, that their eldest son Private Ieuan Evans was killed on the Normandy Front on 2nd August. Private Evans was 29 and before being called up was employed at the Pontardawe Steel Works. He was a cousin of Private Alwyn Hughes who was reported killed on the Normandy Front on 12th August.


Ieuan T Evans died in 1944. His father died only two years later, in 1946, whilst his mother lived until 1958. Iuean had one brother, John Taliesin Evans died in 1987, whilst his sister Eithwen died in 1994.

DEATH OF MR LEWIS EVANS
The death of Mr Lewis Evans or "Dash" Evans as he was popularly known, of 10 Tanydarren Cilmaengwyn took place on Friday aged 58. Mr Evans was a native of Godre'rgraig and a member of a well known local family. In his younger days he had been a keen footballer and as a cyclist had been awarded prizes in competitions.
One of his six brothers, who survive, is Rev Taliesin Evans who had the care of the church in Belfast and who only a day before his brother died, returned home after a month's holiday in this locality.
Deceased is also survived by a widow, five daughters and one son. The elder son Ieuan was killed in Caen two years ago while serving in the RWF Regiment.
The funeral took place on Tuesday at Godre'rgraig Cemetery.
The mourners were: Messrs Taliesin Evans son; Griffith Rees, David Jones and Haydn Lewis sons-in-law; Johnny Evans, WH Evans, David S Evans, Taliesin Evans, Maldwyn A Evans, Trefor Evans brothers; Eddie Hughes and William Davies brothers-in-law; Tom Evans, Tom Lloyd, William Frances, Lewis Frances, George Frances, Charles Morgan, Evan George, Caleb Williams uncles; Danny Thomas, Roger Jones Lewis, Alun and Ceri Rees, Melfryn Jones, Dudley Jones, Gareth Jones, Ceri Jones grandsons; Gwennie Rees, Margaret and Anna Evans granddaughters.
Mourners at the house were: Mrs May Evans widow; Mrs M Annie Rees, Mrs Elizabeth Jones, Mrs Eluned Thomas, Mrs Meiriona Lewis and Eiddwen Evans daughters; Mrs Doris Evans Bath daughter-in-law was not able to be present.

MRS MARY EVANS YNYSMEUDWY
The funeral of Mrs Mary Evans of 10 Tanydarren Ynysmeudwy, who died on 21st November aged 67, took place at Godre'rgraig Cemetery on Tuesday 25th of November.
Mourners at funeral: Tal son; Griff, Dai, Haydn, Ron sons-in-laws; Danny, Melvyn, Ceri, Roger, Eirof, Keri, Gareth grand children; uncle Will; Tom Ford, Evan Thomas, Di Gwyn cousins; Sam, Maldwyn, Trevor brothers-in-law; Maldwyn, David, Brian, Tom, Glyn, Dewi nephews.
Mourners at house were: Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Eiluned, Mairiona, and Eithwen, daughters; Audrey daughter in law; Debbie: Hannah Jane sister; Gwennie, Sheila, Janet, Carol granddaughters; Enid, Annie, Maggie, Phyllis, Mary Jane cousins.
